Somebody hears about your business. Maybe a friend mentioned it, maybe they drove past your sign. So they pull out their phone and type your name into Google.
Nothing comes up. Or worse — something comes up, but it's wrong. Old address, no phone number, a Facebook page you haven't touched in two years.
What do they do next? They don't call you. They don't drive over to check. They Google someone else.
This isn't a guess — it's what happens every day
According to just about every study on this, somewhere between 70% and 80% of people look up a local business online before they visit. That number is higher for people under 40, but even older customers are doing it more than you'd think.
They want to know three things: what you do, where you are, and whether you're any good. If they can't find any of that, they move on. It doesn't matter how great your work is if nobody can verify that you exist.
What "finding nothing" actually looks like
It's not always a blank search result. Sometimes it's worse:
- A Google listing with no photos, no hours, and a phone number that rings to voicemail
- A Yelp page you didn't create with one bad review from 2019
- A Facebook page that says you're open but hasn't posted anything in eight months
- A website builder landing page that says "coming soon" — and has said that for a year
All of these tell the same story: this business doesn't care enough to show up online. And if they don't care about that, what else don't they care about?
That's not fair. You probably care a lot. You're just busy running the business. But the person Googling you doesn't know that.
Your competition doesn't have to be better — just more visible
Here's the thing that stings: the business that shows up in search results isn't always the best one. It's just the one that bothered to be there. A mediocre shop with a decent website and a few Google reviews will beat an excellent shop with no web presence every single time.
That's not because people are shallow. It's because they have no way to evaluate you. They can't compare your work to someone else's if they can't find you.
What it costs you
Every person who Googles you and finds nothing is a customer you never knew you lost. There's no phone call you missed. No one walked in and walked out. They just quietly chose someone else.
You'll never see those numbers. You'll never know it happened. That's what makes it dangerous — it's invisible. Your business feels fine because the customers who do find you are happy. But you have no idea how many people looked, found nothing, and left.
You don't need much to fix this
You don't need a complicated website. You don't need to be on every social media platform. You don't need to blog or make videos or learn SEO.
You need one clean page that says who you are, what you do, where you are, and how to reach you. Real photos. Real hours. Real contact info. That's it.
That's what I build. One page, hand-coded, fast, mobile-friendly, and yours forever — starting at $250. No subscriptions, no monthly fees, no platform lock-in.
